Virginia Belle Matteson Gier

Virginia Belle Matteson Gier, 97, of South Dayton completed her earthly journey on January 5, 2022.
Born October 30, 1924, in Gowanda, NY to the late Silas Guy and Ruth (Meyers) Matteson, Virginia – Ginna to many – was the sun around which her family orbited. She is survived by her four children Donna (Ellis) Sprague, Dwayne (Mary) Gier, Lois (Dennis) Waite and Douglas (Amy) Gier, 11 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. To every one of these, she gave generously of her gifts, among them her warm smile, her unflinchingly direct opinions, hours of splendid conversation punctuated by her infectious giggles, and her solemn advice to always eat dessert first.
Firmly rooted in this beloved corner of western New York (later making annual winter escapes to Clearwater, Florida), Virginia graduated from South Dayton High School and Buffalo Business College. She partnered in the family business with her husband of 46 years, Donald Gier, who died in 1988. Ginna was rightfully proud of the business she and Don built together and later passed to their sons: Giers GLF, which became Giers Agway Services and later, Giers Farm Service, Inc. Ginna was a fixture at the Mill, and very active in the community, serving as Villenova Town Clerk, as an officer for the PTA, Bowling League, and South Dayton Women's Club, as well as a Den Mother for Cub Scouts. She enjoyed lifelong friendships with many who called this area home, until recently still organizing class reunions. Virginia is predeceased by her sisters, Mary Hills and Martha Howard, with whom she sang in a trio at church.
After her retirement in 1988, Ginna found time to pursue her many hobbies, including genealogy, crocheting, calligraphy, painting, ceramics, and baking – often undertaken while cheerfully humming or singing her favorite hymns. She loved to visit with family and friends on the phone, regaling them with her latest adventures and funny stories. On October 30th each year, she would settle into her chair and begin making calls to announce, “It’s time to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to me!” She loved to have a baby on her lap, to engage a grandchild in conversation, and to share with everyone her gratitude for her life and the gift of each day.
Virginia shared a special song with the littles in her life. It is apropos as a reminder that she will hereafter and forever be shining down on the ones she loves.
I see the moon and the moon sees me,
The moon sees somebody I want to see
God bless the moon and God bless me:
And God bless that somebody I want to see.

Relatives and friends may visit DiStasio Funeral Home 478 Route 83 at Balcoms Corner S. Dayton Monday January 10,2022 from 4PM to 7PM where a funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11AM. Rev Brad Ringer will officiate.

Virginia was such a beautiful person. I have so many fond memories of her at the mill always willing to take time to talk with people. She really cared about everyone she knew. I am sorry for the great loss to your family. May God give you great comfort.

Fondly remembered by Neil & Eleanor McDaniel. She was truly a remarkable woman and a wonderful neighbour for the past 20 years when we lived across the road from her at the Ranch Mobile, Clearwater, Florida. Our sincere condolences.

I have many fond memories of being at the Gier home with Lois during Jr. high and High School. Mrs. Gier was the stronghold there. She was always very kind to me. Our heartfelt condolences to the entire family. Joy (Colvin) and Kevin Kelly

Remember going into the Agway store(affectionately known to most as the feed mill) when Virginia was still working. She always took time to ask about our family and just to say hi. Fond memories of a very nice person.
Our prayers go out to the family during this difficult time. May fond memories of the past provide you with much comfort as you move forward.

My beautiful (and often hilarious)Aunt Ginna...I have so many wonderful memories of times spent with you. I am sure heaven is a little brighter since you joined your loved ones there. We who are left behind will miss your beautiful face and that giggle! Until we meet again Aunt Ginna, we love and miss you.
